Tips When Visiting During Vermont’s Maple Sugaring Season

Vermont Maple sugaring season is an amazing time to visit, especially here in the Northeast Kingdom.

Vermont sugaring season begins in late February and ends in early April. Without doubt, March is the best time to experience the maple sugaring process here in North Country. Come, visit Vermont like a local.

Rabbit Hill Inn is just a short drive to several maple farms and sugar shacks that vermont maple sugar housewelcome visitors and offer tours. We will gladly provide you with all the details needed to go and see for yourself how the maple magic happens.

If you see steam, there’s a boil going on. See all of the hard work and dedication that goes into making that liquid gold. Learn about the different grades and taste them all. The best part is watching the boil in action.  You can even snowshoe through the  woods where the tapped maple trees are collecting the sap. One of the best parts is the aroma of maple sugaring. Sweet smelling puffy white clouds of steam fill the air.  This is a true Vermont  experience!

These farms are family owned and have been passed down for generations. They are delighted that you are visiting their sugar house. Photos & video are always welcome. When visiting, remember to be courteous. These sugar houses are a bustling work environment. Your host will guide you along during your visit. Don’t forget to purchase syrup while you are at the sugar house.

While at Rabbit Hill Inn, be sure to enjoy that local maple syrup with your breakfasts. You may want to try some in your coffee – it’s delicious!  What are you waiting for?  Sugaring season does not last very long – so book your stay with us in March! We will have your guided tour ready when you get here. Check availability here.

Here are some fun facts to get you excited about sugaring season!

  • It takes 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of pure maple syrup.
  • Pure maple syrup contains antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and amino acids – making it good for your health and a great alternative to refined sugar (in moderation of course).
  • REAL maple syrup is 100% fat free and contains no preservatives. (sorry Mrs. Butterworth, you lose.)
  • Buy extra! You can keep maple syrup in the freezer for a very very long time (like forever)! It will never freeze solid.  Always keep your open bottle of syrup in the refrigerator.
  • There is actually a law in Vermont making it illegal to label a product on a restaurant menu or food package as “maple” if it is not pure maple syrup. Vermonters take this stuff seriously!
  • Bottles of maple syrup is a super sweet gift idea!

Although you can visit maple sugar houses anytime during sugaring season, consider visiting during Vermont Maple Open House Weekend . Lots of extra fun stuff happens on this especially sweet weekend. Here is the official map for Vermont Maple Open House Weekend.
