America’s Best Romantic Winter Getaway Destinations

Travel Leisure logo

Travel+Leisure Magazine has revealed its top winter travel destinations; and our beautiful, scenic Vermont  village and Rabbit Hill Inn made the list of 15 best romantic winter destinations in America!  Here’s  what they had to say -

“Winter scenes of Lower Waterford Vermont are truly picture-perfect, having graced Christmas cards and won Kodak Image of the Year back in 1959. Not much has changed since. Show up in town, and you’ll find a white-steepled church, snow-patched wooded trails, and a holiday-clad Main Street. Snowshoe along the Connecticut River, explore pine-laden White Mountain National Forest, or ski the 100-mile scenic Kingdom Trails. It won’t be long before local craft brewers, cheese makers, and maple syrup sugar houses beckon you indoors.”

Where to Stay: Rabbit Hill Inn, a 200-year-old restored residence and tavern in the shadow of the White Mountains. It has the classic romantic trappings: canopy beds, fireplaces, private porches, and candlelit breakfasts.

Visit a Real Ice Castle at Loon Mountain New Hampshire

The Ice Castle at Loon Mountain is NOW OPEN in Lincoln New Hampshire! And it’s just 30 minutes away from Rabbit Hill Inn.  Imagine the thrill of walking through the center of massive glacier-like solid pillars of ice, combined with ice tunnels, caves, and archways.  All of it built out of solid ice.  At night, LED lighting makes the Ice Castle even more magical.

This is the first Ice Castle built on the East Coast. Built by Utah-based artist Brent Christensen using a latticework of icicles and a vast sprinkler system, Christensen has created a massive ice fortress for visitors to explore, with walls reaching 25 feet high. At night, multi-colored lights transform the castle into a frozen, glowing Narnia.  But you need to hurry, this Ice Castle will close on March 1st.

Rabbit Hill Inn Featured on the Today Show

today-logoRabbit Hill Inn was featured on the NBC Today Show on January 27, 2014.  A few weeks prior, Stephanie Orma, from Travel and Leisure magazine, wrote an article showcasing  America’s Most Romantic Winter Destinations. Rabbit Hill Inn and Lower Waterford, Vermont made the top 15 list along with some outstanding properties. From the impact of her article, the Today Show chose to do a story featuring inns for an affordable Valentine’s Day and romantic getaways. Travel and Leisure’s international editor, Mark Orwoll, picked Rabbit Hill Inn as one of the top five romantic getaway destinations in the country.

We are thrilled to be highlighted on a national television show. Rabbit Hill inn specializes in romantic getaways and retreats for couples.  We are thrilled and truly grateful to Travel + Leisure and the Today Show for telling the world about the romantic Rabbit Hill Inn experience in the “most idyllic New England village you can imagine”, Lower Waterford in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom.

Younger Travelers Prefer “The Rabbit Hill Inn Experience”

Tara pic

Sorry hotels… clearly, the inn or bed and breakfast experience is exactly what the next generation of travelers are craving.  According to a recent study by global hotel consultancy HVS London (and many studies prior),  the new breed of guests wants exactly what Rabbit Hill Inn is all about.  We hate to gloat, but their travel desires describe the Rabbit Hill Inn experience to a tee.

Here’s the nutshell of what the study revealed…

‘A New Breed of Traveler’, says the impact of rising affluence, globalization and technology has led to modern hotel guests valuing experiences and the feeling of ‘being connected’ over traditional hotel luxuries.

  • “… many hotels still consist of the same in-room amenities, the same heavy curtains, the same check-in process, and the same small desk. This is no longer a place where the modern-day traveler feels at home,” states report co-author HVS associate Veronica Waldthausen
  • “This new segment of traveler is no longer looking for white-linen service, bellboys to carry their luggage or a concierge. When the current generation of young travelers enter a hotel, they want to feel completely at home, connected and to be in a setting where they can be part of an experience,” she adds.
  • They seek social experiences, enjoy spending time in a comfortable  home-like common spaces, interacting with others. They desire a sense of community of like-minded travelers.  The new breed is not attracted to rooms equipped with gadgets and technology (they have their own).
  • Hotels are scurrying to retrofit their space – converting lobbies into living rooms and redesigning their rooms to feel more homey. Some have eliminated staff uniforms and scripted check-in conversation. But let’s be honest, it will always be a hotel by structure, nature, and function.  Inns and bed and breakfasts fulfill all the desires without breaking a sweat.
  • According to this study, “Guests are looking for a home-away-from-home. The new era is about participating in an experience, rather than flaunting wealth. Travelers today don’t want to feel like they are in a corporate setting, but thrive in environments where they can interact with people.  They want everyone to participate and don’t mind interacting with new people,” says co-author Arlett Oehmichen, HVS London director. “ a place where guests can become part of an experience by interacting with the people that live there as well as staff.
This clearly explains why so many younger couples are finding their way to Rabbit Hill Inn,  and coming back so often.  We agree with them… Rabbit Hill Inn is pretty darn cool.
